WELLSTON, Ohio — An 11-year-old Wellston boy was flown to a Huntington, West Virginia, hospital after a pickup truck struck him and his mother as they crossed South Pennsylvania Avenue in Wellston on Saturday evening, Oct. 31, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at about 7 p.m., as the city’s scheduled Halloween trick-or-treat hours were ending. Troopers say a northbound 2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty struck the two near milepost 26, by the Wendy’s, as they were crossing the road. That stretch of South Pennsylvania Avenue is also State Route 93.
The boy was taken from the scene by Jackson County EMS and then flown by MedFlight to Cabell Huntington Hospital with injuries troopers described as non-life-threatening. His mother, Haley Coon, 36, of Wellston, declined medical treatment at the scene.
The truck was driven by Carl Nichols, 69, of Wellston. His passenger was Shawn Jones, 50, of Wellston. Neither reported any injuries.
The Jackson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating, with help at the scene from the Wellston Police Department and Jackson County EMS. Troopers ask anyone with information about the crash to contact the Jackson Post.
