Real ID at the Ohio BMV: The Papers Chillicothe and Circleville Deputies Will Actually Take

The Ohio BMV will not issue a Real ID on the card you already have. The star on the license is a document check. People in Chillicothe and Circleville lose a morning because they bring the old license, a passport photo, and a piece of mail with a P.O. box.

You need three stacks.

Identity and legal presence: a certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a consular report of birth abroad, or a naturalization or citizenship certificate. A hospital certificate does not count. A photocopy does not count. The birth certificate has to be the certified copy with the seal. If the name on it does not match the name you use now, bring the marriage certificate or the court order that connects them.

Social Security: the card, a W-2, a 1099, or a tax form that shows the full nine digits. A number written on a sticky note does not count. A metal novelty card does not count.

Residency: two documents from different sources, with your name and a street address, generally recent. A utility bill, a lease, a mortgage statement, a bank statement. A P.O. box does not prove where you live. Two envelopes from the same company are a weak pair.

The card fee is the same whether you get the star or the standard license. The difference is the folder you carry in. Deputy registrars in Ross and Pickaway counties run on appointments. Walking in with the wrong birth paper means a second trip and another day off work.

A standard Ohio license still drives. The star is what federal rules ask for at an airport security line and some federal buildings. If you are not flying, you can still be turned away later and wish you had done it on a Tuesday.

Bottom line: certified birth certificate or passport, proof of the full Social Security number, two street-address documents from different places. Check the BMV’s current list the week you go. The counter will not bend a category because the line is long.
