One person was killed late Friday night in a structure fire in the 800 block of Hartwood Road, according to a critical incident release from the Huntington Township Fire Department.
The Ross County Sheriff’s Office took a 911 call reporting the fire at 11:01 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. Huntington Township crews were en route within minutes, along with mutual aid from multiple departments. Callers reported a possible entrapment, and an air medical helicopter was placed on standby.
The first arriving engine found heavy fire conditions, and crews quickly shifted to a defensive operation, fighting the fire from outside the structure. The department confirmed that one civilian died in the fire. The victim’s name has not been released.
About 20 firefighters worked the scene. Mutual aid responded from the Scioto Township, Bainbridge, Twin Township, and VA fire departments, along with a tanker from Pike Township, and the Ross County Sheriff’s Office was also on scene.
“Mutual aid like this is exactly why we make mutual aid contracts, and why the importance of mutual aid is detrimental to the overall operation of the incident,” the department said in its release, thanking its partners for their quick response. “Our prayers and condolences are with all people involved in this incident.”
The fire remains under investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
