COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio (FOP), the state’s largest law enforcement union representing more than 23,000 sworn officers, announced endorsements Tuesday for Republican candidates in all major 2026 statewide races.
The endorsements cover the special election for United States Senate, the races for governor and lieutenant governor, attorney general, auditor of state, secretary of state, treasurer of state, and two seats on the Supreme Court of Ohio.

• Supreme Court of Ohio: Colleen O’Donnell
FOP members reviewed recommendations from a screening committee that interviewed candidates and then voted on the endorsements during the union’s annual conference.
FOP President Jay McDonald emphasized the union’s focus on candidates’ commitment to law enforcement priorities.
“Our members take these decisions seriously because the officials elected statewide have a direct impact on public safety, the justice system, and the working conditions of law enforcement officers,” McDonald said. “We’re not asking for anything revolutionary. We want candidates with a proven commitment to supporting law enforcement and standing with us on issues that help our members keep their communities safe.”
Key issues highlighted by the union include pension rights, PTSD coverage for officers, access to necessary equipment and training, and support for police amid public safety challenges. McDonald referenced the union’s “Protect Ohio Police Hall of Shame” for politicians perceived as unsupportive.
The union noted that Supreme Court candidates were not asked to make promises on matters that could come before the court. Discussions instead focused on judicial philosophy and approach to the law. Other candidates were questioned on policies affecting officers and the communities they serve.
McDonald added that the FOP looks forward to sharing these endorsements with its members and voters across Ohio.
Context on Ohio FOP Endorsements
The Ohio FOP has historically endorsed candidates from both parties but has leaned heavily Republican in recent cycles, including 2022 and 2024. It backed most Democratic statewide candidates in 2018.
This announcement comes as Ohio prepares for the November 2026 general election, which includes several high-profile races. The endorsements represent a significant boost for the Republican ticket from a major public safety organization.
