MASSIEVILLE, Ohio — Veterans from Massieville and across Ross County gathered at The Historic South Scioto School for a special veterans appreciation dinner, bringing together community members to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

The evening began with an opening message delivered by Pastor Jeff Blakeman, who shared a passage from the Bible concerning King Hezekiah and his response to events that would unfold after his lifetime. The message touched on the importance of considering the future and the impact one’s actions can have on generations to come., setting the tone for an evening of remembrance, appreciation, and community fellowship.

One of the evening’s most meaningful moments came during the reading of the obituary of Michael Hamner, a Massieville native who lost his life while serving during the Vietnam War. His story was followed by a reading of the names of 23 individuals from Ross County who lost their lives during the conflict.

The tribute carried special significance for many in attendance, as several community members personally recognized the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The readings served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by local service members and the lasting impact their loss continues to have on the community.
Following the remembrance ceremony, guests enjoyed a dinner featuring pulled pork, ham, baked beans, and a variety of desserts, including homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Throughout the event, attendees also had the opportunity to tour the historic South Scioto School, exploring the building and learning more about a landmark that has long been part of the Massieville community.

The evening also featured a silent auction, which concluded following dinner.
The gathering provided an opportunity for veterans, families, and community members to come together, share memories, and recognize the men and women who have served their country.
For the Massieville community, the evening was more than a dinner. It was an opportunity to preserve local history, remember those who never returned home, and ensure that the sacrifices of Ross County’s veterans are never forgotten.
