Highland County dog licenses come from Auditor Alex J. Butler’s office at 119 Governor Foraker Place, Hillsboro. The phone is 937-393-1915. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
In the December-through-January window, the auditor’s site listed a one-year tag at $14, a three-year tag at $42, and a permanent tag at $140, with sales running from Dec. 1, 2025, through Jan. 30, 2026. After that season, the same site listed tags at $28 for one year, $56 for three years, and $154 for a permanent license. The jump lines up with the usual late penalty. Confirm which column you are in before you write the check. Online orders at doglicenses.us add a vendor fee the auditor listed at $2.15, $3.40, or $5.60 depending on the term, and the tag is mailed.
You can also buy a tag, for an extra 75 cents, at Steven’s Hardware, 1450 Jefferson St. in Greenfield, or at the Highland County License Bureau, 1575 N. High St., Suite 500, Hillsboro. Those outlets are a convenience. The record still belongs to the auditor.
A kennel license is listed at $70, and the auditor says the applicant has to hold a vendor’s license. A vendor’s license is also an auditor counter. If you are starting a boarding or breeding setup, do that piece first.
The tag is not optional once the dog is old enough under state law. The hardware-store receipt does not replace the tag on the collar.
