Gary Lee Siders Sr., 73, one of four adults charged in connection with the discovery of 16 children in what authorities described as deplorable conditions at a home in Hamden, Vinton County, has been released from the hospital and placed on a $300,000 own-recognizance bond, according to court records.
Siders Sr. appeared in Vinton County Common Pleas Court on Monday, August 3, 2026. Judge Laina Fetherolf Rogers ordered him to return for all future hearings while the case remains pending. He is charged with endangering children under Ohio Revised Code 2919.22(B)(1). As of the most recent available reporting prior to his release, he and the three co-defendants each faced 16 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment, one count connected to each of the children.
Bond conditions require Siders Sr. to obey all laws, keep the court informed of any address or phone number changes, attend all court appearances, report to the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office within 24 hours for fingerprinting and DNA collection, submit to drug or alcohol screening upon request by law enforcement, and wear a GPS monitoring device at the state’s expense. Siders Sr. had been hospitalized since early July after he fell during transport related to a scheduled preliminary hearing on July 7. He was taken to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital in Athens, where tests indicated a serious medical condition requiring specialized care outside the immediate area. Vinton County Prosecutor William L. Archer Jr. previously explained that the county would have been responsible for the medical costs while Siders Sr. remained in jail as an unconvicted defendant, costs that officials said could potentially have bankrupted the county. The bond was modified from $300,000 cash or surety to a $300,000 own-recognizance bond so he could receive treatment without that financial burden on local taxpayers.
A competency evaluation was ordered on July 9. The Forensic Diagnostic Center of District Nine, Inc., is to examine Siders Sr. to determine whether he is competent to stand trial and whether he would be not guilty by reason of insanity. A written report is to be submitted to the court under seal.
The charges stem from the execution of a search warrant on June 30, 2026, at a residence at 182 Ohmer Street in Hamden. Authorities located 16 children, ranging in age from approximately 18 months to 18 years, inside the home. Officials described the conditions as deplorable. The children were removed and placed in the temporary custody of children’s services agencies. The three co-defendants, Christina Lynn Siders, Gary Lee Siders Jr., and Elizabeth Ann Siders, remain held on $300,000 cash or surety bonds at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail and are prohibited from contact with co-defendants or the alleged victims.
As of late July, a Vinton County grand jury had not issued indictments. Competency evaluations have also been sought for other defendants. Some gag orders and sealed filings have been entered in related proceedings. The cases remain pending, and all defendants are presumed innocent.
