RITTMAN, Ohio — A law enforcement response to a reported breaking and entering in Rittman turned deadly Sunday night after officers were met with gunfire, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuries to multiple others, according to information released by responding agencies.
Authorities said 911 calls were received around 9:30 p.m. reporting a disturbance and shots fired at a residence on Chippewa Trail. When officers arrived, they reportedly came under immediate gunfire.
Initial reports indicate a Rittman police officer was struck multiple times, suffering gunshot wounds to the hip, shoulder, and arm. The officer was rescued from the scene and transported to a trauma center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The situation quickly escalated into a large-scale critical incident, prompting a response from numerous law enforcement, fire, and EMS agencies throughout the region. Officials reported that a Wayne County Sheriff’s Office K-9 was also shot and injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Authorities stated the suspect remained barricaded inside the residence, reportedly holding hostages in the basement. Multiple armored rescue vehicles, including BearCats from neighboring agencies, were deployed as officers worked to rescue victims and contain the threat.
During the hours-long standoff, additional officers were reportedly wounded, bringing the total number of officers shot to three. Two female victims inside the residence were also found suffering from gunshot wounds. Officials later confirmed both women died as a result of the incident.
The standoff came to an end after authorities located the suspected gunman inside the residence with what was described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
In total, the incident left one officer dead, two additional officers injured, two female victims deceased, and a law enforcement K-9 wounded.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been called in to lead the investigation, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings and major critical incidents. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved or provided additional details regarding what led to the shooting.
Residents were urged to avoid the area throughout the incident as first responders worked to secure the scene.
