The Waverly City Schools Board of Education says the school district income tax levy on the November 3 ballot is not the levy the board approved.
In a statement posted October 28, the board said it proposed and submitted a five-year, 0.5% income tax, and that the proposal was approved by the board and the Ohio Department of Taxation before it went to the Board of Elections. The ballot, however, identifies the proposal as an earned income tax.
The board said the distinction matters. An earned income tax applies to a smaller range of income and would raise less money than the tax the board originally proposed.
The district has faced reduced funding and rising expenses, and the board said it has made more than $1.6 million in budget cuts over the past year. The levy was proposed to prevent further cuts.
The board said the five-year, 0.5% earned income tax as printed on the ballot will not completely cover the district’s needs, but it will still help.
The board encouraged all residents to learn about the issues on the ballot and take part in the November 3 election. Early voting is already underway in Ohio.
