It is National School Bus Safety Week, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers when they have to stop for a school bus.
On roads with two or three lanes, everyone stops, in both directions. On a highway with four or more lanes, only the vehicles going the same direction as the bus have to stop. Drivers coming the other way should still slow down and use caution.
Any time you are behind a bus and see the red lights flashing and the stop arm out, stop, the sheriff’s office said. Yellow lights mean the bus is about to stop, so slow down and be ready to stop.
Drivers who illegally pass a stopped bus face serious consequences, and bus drivers are authorized to report drivers who go around a stopped bus, the office said.
“Saving a few seconds on your commute is not worth someone’s life,” the sheriff’s office said. “Please just be patient and stay aware.”
