BEAVER, Ohio — The best seat in Pike County on Friday morning might have been inside a fire truck. Kindergarten students at Eastern Elementary got a visit from the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department on Friday, October 9, as part of National Fire Prevention Week.
Firefighters walked the classes through a fire safety discussion and talked about making a fire safety plan at home with their families. Students got to see the department’s equipment up close, climb inside the truck, and watch demonstrations in front of Engine 1201.

One part of the visit was aimed squarely at the youngest students: seeing a firefighter dressed in full turnout gear, mask and all. The idea, the school said, is that children who know what a firefighter looks and sounds like in gear are less likely to be frightened or hide if they ever meet one during a real house fire.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme centers on charging batteries safely at home, a nod to the lithium-ion batteries now powering everything from phones and tablets to toys and tools around the house.

Eastern Elementary thanked the Stockdale volunteers for their continued dedication and support of the school and the community. The Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department is an all-volunteer department serving the Stockdale area of eastern Pike County.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and fire departments across south-central Ohio spend it visiting schools and teaching kids the basics of staying safe.
