COLUMBUS, Ohio — A robbery suspect shot himself in the leg getting out of the stolen car he had just taken, Columbus police say, and both he and an 18-year-old accused with him are now facing felony robbery charges.
Officers were called to the 3600 block of West Broad Street at about 3:17 a.m. Sunday, October 25, on a report of a stolen vehicle, according to Columbus police. The victim identified the two suspects as Scott Unger, 21, and Wayne Erwin, 18.
Police say the two took the victim’s vehicle and drove it to the 300 block of South Chase Avenue. As Unger got out of the car, a firearm he was carrying went off and shot him in the leg, according to police. Both men then ran from the area.
A friend later took both men to a local hospital, where Unger was treated for the gunshot wound, police say. Both were arrested afterward, Unger on Sunday and Erwin on Monday.
Unger is charged in Franklin County Municipal Court with robbery, a second-degree felony, under the grade of the offense alleging a deadly weapon was on or about him or under his control. His bond was set at $10,085, and court records show a surety bond was posted Tuesday. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, November 4.

Erwin faces the same second-degree felony robbery charge. His bond was set at $30,085, and court records show a surety bond was posted Tuesday, the day of his arraignment. His bond conditions order him to stay away from the victim and bar him from possessing firearms, weapons, or ammunition. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday, November 5.
Both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
