A three-day Halloween festival in Yoctangee Park, library programs in Chillicothe and Portsmouth, and a string of Ross County flu clinics fill the public calendars for Oct. 7–13.

  • Ross County | CHILLICOTHE — Tai chi and storytime at the Main Library. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Tai chi runs 9–10 a.m. in Main Library Annex Room B, 40 W. Fifth St.; it is aimed at beginners and led by certified instructor Pam Nichols, so wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes.   • Ross County | CHILLICOTHE — “Beetlejuice Jr.” Thursday, Oct. 8, 7–9 p.m., Chillicothe Civic Theatre, 83 S. Walnut St. The theatre’s youth production opens. Ross County | CHILLICOTHE — Chillicothe Halloween Festival. Friday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m.–10 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m.–10 p.m.; Sunday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Yoctangee Park, 1 Enderlin Circle. Free admission. Vendors, festival food, live entertainment, inflatables, a haunted attraction, a costume contest, trunk-or-treat, a car show and the annual coffin races. Why it matters: It is free, runs three days in the city’s main park, and will bring extra traffic to the park and downtown all weekend.

Ross County | CHILLICOTHE — Trail & Treat. Saturday, Oct. 10, 5–7 p.m., Buzzard’s Roost, 514 Red Bird Lane. The Ross County Park District leads a costume walk on the KNZ Trail from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by crafts, games, snacks and pumpkins to decorate at the shelter house. Free, but every attendee, including children, needs a ticket; 200 are available and sales close at 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. Leashed pets are welcome. Why it matters: A free outdoor Halloween night in a county park, but the ticket deadline is Thursday night.

Ross County | CHILLICOTHE — Winnie-the-Pooh Turns 100. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2–3 p.m., children’s area of the Main Library, 140 S. Paint St. The library marks 100 years of Winnie-the-Pooh and the Hundred Acre Wood with a program for preschool and school-age children. Library event page
Why it matters: A free weekend program for younger children with no registration listed.

Scioto County | PORTSMOUTH — Cosplay 101. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2–4 p.m., meeting room of the Portsmouth Public Library, 1220 Gallia St. Rachel Mullins, who performs as Miss Kitty’s Cosplay, covers costume basics, and participants make a cosplay piece to take home. Why it matters: A free, hands-on costume workshop for teens and adults three weeks before Halloween.

  • Scioto County | PORTSMOUTH — Teen pumpkin painting and the Literary Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2:30–4 p.m., Portsmouth Public Library, 1220 Gallia St. The library supplies pumpkins and paint for teens to make a book-themed pumpkin. Teens can take it home or enter it in the library’s Literary Pumpkin Decorating Contest, which is open to all ages through Oct. 22, with prizes by age group.
