SCIOTO TOWNSHIP, Ohio (Sept. 14, 2026) — A 47-year-old Columbus man died and three other people were injured Sunday evening in a wrong-way, head-on crash on State Route 104 in Pickaway County, according to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey said the sheriff’s office communications center received 911 calls at 6:37 p.m. Sept. 13 reporting a head-on collision on State Route 104 just north of State Route 316. The crash was later pinpointed to the area of 12534 State Route 104, just north of Walker Road in Scioto Township.
South Bloomfield police arrived first. Sheriff’s deputies reached the scene a short time later and found a two-vehicle head-on crash. One vehicle was smoking, and crews had trouble getting occupants out. The driver of the other vehicle got out without help.
A preliminary investigation found a 2017 red Chevrolet Trax traveling southbound in the northbound lane. Witnesses told deputies a 2024 blue GMC truck was traveling northbound in the northbound lane. As the vehicles approached each other, the GMC swerved into the southbound lane to try to avoid a head-on impact. Deputies said the Chevrolet Trax then also swerved toward the southbound lane and struck the GMC head-on.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to assist.
Fire and EMS crews had to extricate the driver and two occupants of the Chevrolet Trax. The driver was identified as Basil A. Southern, 47, of Columbus. Harrison Township Fire and EMS pronounced Southern dead at the scene.
The two occupants of the Trax were identified as Anna M. Southern and Stephanie A. Foster, both of Columbus. Scioto Township Fire and EMS took them to Columbus-area hospitals. The sheriff’s office has not released their conditions.
The driver of the GMC was identified as Amanda J. Howard. Circleville Fire and EMS took her to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff Hafey thanked South Bloomfield Police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Commercial Point Police, Harrison Township Fire and EMS, Scioto Township Fire and EMS, Circleville Fire and EMS, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Pickaway County Coroner Dr. Seth Yates.
The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Authorities have not announced a cause or any charges.
