WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller will become White House chief of staff on Monday, replacing Susie Wiles in a shake-up that comes three days after Republicans lost control of Congress in the midterm elections.
Miller, 41, is currently a deputy chief of staff and one of Trump’s longest-serving and most trusted advisers. He has led the administration’s hardline immigration agenda, and over the past year his role has grown to cover wide areas of domestic policy.
“I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026,” Trump said in his announcement. “Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff. She has done a great job!”
Wiles, 69, has served as chief of staff since the start of Trump’s second term in January 2025, and she was the first woman ever to hold the job. Before that, she managed Trump’s 2024 campaign.
In her own statement Friday, Wiles said serving as chief of staff was “the honor of a lifetime” and that Friday would be her last day in the role. She announced earlier this fall that she had completed treatment for breast cancer and was cancer free.
The change follows Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which Democrats regained control of both the House and the Senate.
