ROSS COUNTY

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A woman told Ross County deputies she lost $4,500 in a Facebook Marketplace scam, according to the sheriff’s office call log.

The report came in on Monday, Oct. 12, at about 11:19 a.m. Deputy JoHansen met with the woman at the Law Enforcement Complex. The report was connected to an address on Morrison Road in Chillicothe.

The log did not say what was being bought or sold, or how the money was sent.

Consumer protection agencies and Facebook’s own safety guidance offer a few basic precautions for Marketplace deals:

  • Meet in person in a public place, and look over the item before any money changes hands.
  • Be wary of anyone who asks for a deposit up front, or for payment by gift card, wire transfer or a payment app before you have seen the item. Those payments are hard to get back.
  • Keep the conversation on Marketplace. Sellers or buyers who push you to text or email, send you a verification code, or “accidentally” overpay and ask for the difference back are common signs of a scam.

Hopewell Heritage Headlines has reported on other scams aimed at Ross County residents, including calls spoofing the sheriff’s office number to ask for bond money.

No further details were available in the log. We are reaching out for more information and will update this story as details become available.
