President Donald Trump stated Friday night that he intends to run for a fourth term and pulled out a red “Trump 2028” hat during the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.
Toward the end of a speech lasting more than an hour at the Waldorf Astoria, Trump told the audience of journalists and guests he wanted to “save your ratings.” He then said he was pleased to announce “my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States,” according to multiple reports of the remarks. He put the hat on with a theatrical flourish.
The remarks were widely viewed as a joke. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution bars any person from being elected president more than twice. Trump has previously joked about serving beyond two terms.
The dinner was a redo of the April event that ended abruptly after a gunman opened fire outside the Washington Hilton. Trump opened by reflecting on the earlier disruption, saying “the show must go on” and praising security and hotel staff. He mixed conciliatory remarks about the press with personal attacks on political opponents including Rep. Ilhan Omar, Sen. Adam Schiff and others, plus some jabs at individual journalists. He also shook hands with reporters receiving awards, including a Wall Street Journal team honored for coverage related to Jeffrey Epstein, and touched on topics such as the White House ballroom project and foreign policy. Audience reaction was mixed, with some laughter and applause and stretches of silence.
Trump closed by thanking those who attended despite the earlier trauma.
