Ohio requires a license for every dog over three months old. In Scioto County the 2026 tag is an auditor errand, not a vet errand.
Auditor David L. Green’s office is at 602 7th Street, Room 103, Portsmouth, 45662. Phone (740) 355-8232. Weekday hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On or before January 31, a one-year tag is $14. After that the statutory penalty makes it $28. A three-year tag is $42 before the deadline and $56 after. A permanent tag is $120 before and $134 after. Multi-year tags cannot be moved to a different dog, and the auditor’s form says tags are nonrefundable.
Mail applications go to that Room 103 address with a check or money order. Do not send cash. In person is the same office.
A dog that turns three months after July 1, or a dog just brought into Ohio, can qualify for a reduced fee. That exception is narrow. It is not a pardon for a tag you forgot in March.
A tag is not permission to let the dog run. It is the cheap way to get a found dog home, and the thing a dog warden asks for. Kennel tags are a separate application if you are keeping dogs as a business. Do not buy five household tags and call it a kennel.
Buy it by January 31. February is the same dog at twice the price, and the auditor does not have a local waiver for a busy month.
