CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Ross County Humane Society held a ribbon cutting Friday for the shelter it moved into in May, closing a campaign that began in 2021 and grew into a nearly $4 million project.
Construction started in fall 2024. Executive Director Jenn Thomas said staff are still settling into the building. The next goal, she said, is adding a veterinarian to the team — something that is not lined up yet.
The shelter is open for adoptions Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thomas invited residents who want to adopt to come in during those hours.
The old facility had been stretched for years. Supporters argued a new building was the only way to keep stray, neglected, and surrendered animals in the county instead of shipping them out or turning them away. The ribbon cutting is the public marker that the building is no longer a construction site.
No large public events are on the calendar immediately. The organization said the most useful help right now is adoption, fostering, and donations that keep the new building running.
