SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio — Two people are facing first-degree felony charges after authorities say more than 12 pounds of suspected crack cocaine was seized during a traffic stop in Scioto County.
According to an October 5 news release from the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force, the arrests followed an ongoing investigation conducted in coordination with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
At approximately 6:26 p.m. Sunday, October 4, troopers conducted a traffic stop for alleged traffic violations on a vehicle traveling near mile marker 9 on State Route 823 in Lucasville.
During the stop, authorities say troopers seized approximately 5,746 grams — about 12.7 pounds — of suspected crack cocaine. Investigators estimated the drugs had a street value of approximately $574,600.
Authorities identified those arrested as Stephen Hopkins, 49, of Huntington, West Virginia, and Jasmine Martin, 31, of South Point, Ohio.
Both Hopkins and Martin were charged with one count of trafficking in drugs and one count of possession of drugs. According to the task force, both offenses are currently charged as first-degree felonies.
The pair were booked into the Scioto County Jail and were scheduled to appear for arraignment Monday morning in Portsmouth Municipal Court.
Authorities said the case will also be forwarded to the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office for presentation to a Scioto County grand jury, which could consider additional felony charges.
The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
