A driver died early Tuesday after an SUV left the road and hit a utility pole on the South Side of Columbus, according to Columbus police.

Just before midnight on Monday, October 26, an adult was driving a Nissan Rogue south on Fairwood Avenue near Marion Drive when the SUV veered across the centerline and left the road, according to a Columbus police news release reported by the Columbus Dispatch.

The SUV hit trees, large stones and a chain link fence before continuing through a field and hitting a utility pole, police said.

Medics took the driver to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition, where the driver died at 12:33 a.m. Two adult passengers were also taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police did not name the driver in the release. The Columbus police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash, and police said it remains unclear why the vehicle left the road.
