COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio State Highway Patrol officer has been recognized for his quick response after witnessing a crash near the Ohio Statehouse that left occupants trapped inside an overturned SUV.
Police Officer, William Holmes was recently awarded the Patrol’s Certificate of Recognition for his actions following the July 3 crash at the intersection of Third and Broad streets.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Holmes was patrolling the Statehouse grounds when he witnessed the crash. The area was particularly crowded as Columbus prepared for its annual Red, White & BOOM! celebration, with numerous pedestrians, bystanders and vehicles nearby.
When Holmes reached the vehicle, he reportedly found a gray SUV resting on its passenger side with occupants trapped inside. The windshield had shattered and was partially displaced on the driver’s side.
Holmes used his bare hands to grab the damaged glass and pry the windshield away from the vehicle, suffering cuts to both hands in the process.
Columbus police officers and firefighters arrived shortly afterward and took control of the crash scene.
The Highway Patrol said Holmes’ rapid assessment and intervention helped preserve the safety and welfare of those trapped inside the SUV.
Holmes was presented with the Certificate of Recognition for what the Patrol described as his immediate and decisive actions during the emergency.
