The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) uses a mathematical formula to determine which teams will advance into postseason competition.
The formula focuses on a team’s opponents and a team’s opponent’s opponents. Points are awarded according to the division of the teams involved.
The top 12 teams in each of Ohio’s 28 regions will advance to postseason competition.
Many area teams finished in the top 12 in their respective regions to qualify for postseason play.
The top four teams in each region receive a first round bye in the playoffs. The remaining eight teams begin opening round play on Friday night, October 30.
The Chillicothe Cavaliers were one of the teams with enough points, compiled in the regular season, to secure a top four spot in their region and will receive a bye and start their tournament run in the Region 12 quarterfinals on November 6. The Cavaliers will play the winner of Miami Trace and Monroe.
Unioto will also play in the postseason in Region 12. The Shermans will host Cincinnati Northwest in first round play Friday night.
The Jackson Ironmen will be on the road after finishing ninth in the Region 11 standings. Jackson head coach Andy Hall and his team will travel to Columbus to battle Linden McKinley on Friday.
In Division VI Region 24, Zane Trace’s resume was impressive enough to earn the Pioneers a bye in the first round, finishing third in the regional standings. The Pioneers will play the winner of Mechanicsburg and St. Bernard – Elmwood Place out of suburban Cincinnati on November 6.
Also in Region 24, Portsmouth West will host Versailles in a first round game and Huntington (Ross) will entertain Covington. Both games kick off Friday night.
In Division VII Region 27 the Eastern (Pike) Eagles will play the Lucas Cubs in opening round action on Friday night, with the winner facing Danville in Week 12.
In Division V Region 19, the Meigs Marauders will entertain the Piketon Redstreaks in opening round action on October 30 in Pomeroy.
The Wheelersburg Pirates will play host to Grove City Christian at Ed Miller Stadium, the Vinton County Vikings will travel to take on the Worthington Christian Warriors and South Gallia will travel to Shadyside.
Teams who just missed out are headlined by Waverly and Circleville. The two finished outside of the top 12 in the final Region 15 playoffs. Had either team been in any other Division IV region, both teams would have finished in top 12 slots and earned a Week 11 appearance. In Division VII Region 27, Notre Dame finished just outside the top 12 by eight tenths of a point.
