COLUMBUS, Ohio: A Reynoldsburg man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that Columbus police say stemmed from an attempted vehicle theft in May on the city’s Northeast Side, according to Columbus police.

Just before 4:15 a.m. on May 20, officers responded to the 4000 block of Migration Lane on a report of a shooting. They found a 22-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound and a woman who had minor injuries in connection with the shooting. The man was transported to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to homicide detectives, several suspects, including Amari Cross, 22, were trying to steal the woman’s vehicle when she and the man stepped onto a balcony and spotted them. The suspects began shooting at them and struck the man, according to a criminal complaint filed by homicide detectives. The suspects fled after the shooting.

Detectives identified the vehicle the suspects fled in as a Toyota RAV4 that had been stolen a couple of hours before the shooting in Groveport, according to the complaint. The Toyota was later recovered in South Linden the same day, and surveillance footage captured the suspects walking away from it after abandoning it.

After securing search warrants for three cellular towers, detectives found that Cross’s phone was in the same location in South Linden, Groveport and on Columbus’s Northeast Side at the times the crimes were committed, according to the complaint. Police also found a device used to break windows that carried Cross’s DNA, according to the complaint.

Cross was arrested by a Columbus police SWAT team on Monday, October 26, without incident, police said. He is in custody at the Franklin County Jail.

Cross is charged, not convicted. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
