Manhunt Underway in Highland County Following Fatal Shooting; 20-Year-Old Suspect Sought

HIGHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — Authorities are searching for a 20-year-old Highland County man following a fatal shooting Thursday evening, October 22, 2026.

According to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a reported shooting at approximately 8:05 p.m. in the 13000 block of State Route 72. Deputies, Leesburg Police officers, and emergency medical personnel arrived to find a 41-year-old man deceased.

Investigators identified Cassen Kelso Conaway, 20, of Highland County, as the suspect. Authorities reported that Conaway fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.

An extensive, multi-agency manhunt continued throughout the night, involving K-9 teams, drone units, the Highland County Special Response Team, Ohio State Highway Patrol aviation and troopers, and personnel from neighboring sheriff’s offices. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation also assisted.

Highland County Victim’s Witness personnel responded to provide assistance to those affected by the shooting.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding Conaway’s whereabouts to contact the Highland County Sheriff’s Office at (937) 393-1421.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who encounters Conaway should avoid approaching him and contact law enforcement immediately.

Conaway is being sought in connection with the shooting. No conviction has occurred, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
