The freight rail line that crosses Adams County is in line for a major rebuild, paid for in large part by a federal grant.
The Federal Railroad Administration has awarded up to $7,792,839 for the Cincinnati Eastern Main Line Renewal, one of four Ohio projects funded through the federal CRISI rail program, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. The Ohio Rail Development Commission is the applicant for the grant.
The project will rehabilitate about 69 miles of the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad main line in Hamilton, Clermont, Brown and Adams counties. The line runs east from the Cincinnati area through Brown County and into Adams County, ending at Peebles.
Crews will install new ties, replace switch ties and make other track improvements so the line can handle modern 286,000-pound railcars. Federal officials say the work will also end the excepted track status on the line, make freight service safer and more reliable, and cut the risk of derailments.
The Ohio Rail Development Commission will cover 25 percent of the project cost as the nonfederal match, which may include money from the railroad itself.
The award was shared in ODOT’s discretionary grant newsletter. No construction schedule has been announced yet.
