BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Eight individuals are facing capital murder charges, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty, in connection with the 2024 kidnapping, sexual assault and killing of 20-year-old Mahogany Jackson.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, Jackson contacted her family on February 25, 2024, reporting that she was being held hostage and asking for help. Her body was discovered the following morning in southwest Birmingham with a fatal gunshot wound.

Investigators alleged that Jackson was held against her will and subjected to repeated physical and sexual assaults. During court proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence from videos allegedly recorded by individuals involved in the attack. Testimony described Jackson being beaten, kicked, dragged and threatened with firearms.

Authorities identified eight defendants in connection with the killing: Giovonnie Clapp, Blair Green, Teja Lewis, Si’Niya McCall, Airana Robinson, Brandon Pope, Francis Harris and Jeremiah McDowell.

Investigators alleged that Harris fired the fatal gunshot, striking Jackson in the back of the head.

In September 2024, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted all eight defendants on capital murder charges. During December 2024 court proceedings, prosecutors formally announced their intention to pursue the death penalty against all eight. The defendants pleaded not guilty.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond described the killing as one of the most disturbing cases he had encountered during his law enforcement career.

In February 2026, two years after Jackson’s death, her mother organized a community awareness event aimed at encouraging young people to make positive choices and preventing similar tragedies.

The death penalty announcement has recently resurfaced on social media, although the decision was originally announced in December 2024.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
