A Columbus man who had been out of federal prison for about a month is headed back after a federal jury convicted him of illegally possessing a firearm.
Davonta T. Flood, 30, of Columbus, was convicted by a federal jury of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio. The verdict followed a trial that began Oct. 5 before U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley.
According to court documents and trial testimony, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit received a tip about narcotics activity at a residence Flood used on Wheatland Avenue in the Hilltop. In June 2026, deputies executed a search warrant there and found a firearm in a bedroom Flood used, between the mattress and the platform of the bed.
Flood had been released from the Bureau of Prisons on another conviction just one month before the search and was on federal supervised release at the time.
His prior felony convictions include illegally possessing a firearm as a felon and possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute near a school, along with state convictions for aggravated assault, having weapons under disability, receiving stolen property and escape.
Felon in possession of a firearm carries up to 15 years in federal prison. Flood’s sentencing date will be set by the court.
The verdict was announced by U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II, ATF Special Agent in Charge Jorge Rosendo, Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin and Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant.
