HOCKING COUNTY — Drivers who have been bouncing between temporary signals and a closed side road at State Route 664 and Sauerkraut Road are being told the roundabout is open.
The new circle at SR 664 and Sauerkraut Road, Township Road 51, is carrying traffic, according to local accounts this week. ODOT had estimated completion in October. As of a check on Oct. 7, the department’s project page still listed construction as the active step and completion as unfinished, so the “open” report is ahead of that status line.
The job exists because the curve would not behave. From 2018 through 2022 the intersection logged 12 crashes, 11 of them roadway departures. Extra signs and a 15 mph advisory did not fix it. The spot was already on ODOT’s 2014 high-risk rural road list for the county. In 2025 the department put the construction cost at about $2.5 million, with work to start in spring 2026. Temporary signals went up the week of May 25. Sauerkraut Road closed for a stretch of the build. A September update still had it closed, with a detour on Old McArthur Road.
Roundabouts are slower by design. ODOT’s case here was fewer cars leaving the road, not a shorter drive to Logan.
