DAYTON, Ohio | Ohio is making a statewide push to bring the proposed United States Space Academy to the Dayton area, with U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno leading an effort to locate the new institution at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
Moreno, along with other Ohio leaders, announced the effort Monday, arguing that Dayton’s aviation history, military infrastructure and aerospace industry make the region a natural location for the academy.
But what exactly would Ohio be getting, and how much could it cost?
How much would it cost?
The project does not yet have a final price tag.
Moreno has said Ohio would need to contribute approximately $300 million toward construction if Dayton is selected. He has also estimated that the overall federal investment could eventually reach approximately $1 billion.
Those numbers are estimates, not an approved final budget.
The federal government is currently asking states interested in hosting the academy to submit proposals outlining potential locations, costs, infrastructure and partnerships.
Why Dayton?
Supporters say Dayton already has much of what a major space institution would need.
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is home to major Air Force research and intelligence organizations, including the Air Force Research Laboratory and the National Air and Space Intelligence Center.
Wright State University also has existing relationships with Wright-Patterson, NASA and organizations connected to the Space Force.
Ohio is also home to NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland and NASA’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky.
State leaders are additionally pointing to Ohio’s aviation history. The Wright brothers conducted their pioneering aviation work in Dayton, while the state has also produced astronauts including Neil Armstrong and John Glenn.
The proposed Dayton effort would involve Wright State University and Wright-Patterson, creating a connection between higher education, military research and the aerospace industry.
Where is the current Space Academy?
There isn’t one.
The United States Space Academy is a proposed new federal institution. It is not the same as the existing United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The proposed academy is intended to prepare students for careers throughout the space industry, including engineering, science, operations, government and military service.
What are supporters saying?
Ohio supporters argue that Dayton already has the workforce, universities, military facilities and aerospace expertise necessary to support the academy.
They also believe the project could attract additional aerospace companies, research and investment to the Dayton region.
Wright State officials have pointed to the university’s existing partnerships and its location next to Wright-Patterson as major advantages.
What are critics saying?
Criticism of the proposal has primarily centered on the cost and whether another federal academy is necessary.
Some members of Congress have questioned whether the new institution could duplicate programs already offered by existing military academies and universities.
There is also competition from other states seeking to host the academy, meaning Ohio’s proposal will have to compete with other locations with significant aerospace and space infrastructure.
What happens next?
States have until October 26, 2026, to submit proposals to NASA.
The current federal timeline calls for an initial class of roughly 300 students in 2028, with a permanent campus targeted for operation by 2031.
For Ohio, the next major question is whether Dayton can convince federal officials that Wright-Patterson and the surrounding region are the right place to build the nation’s new Space Academy.
For now, the academy remains a proposal. No final location has been selected, and the final cost has not yet been established.
