Ross County residents and visitors from across southern Ohio stepped into J.R.R. Tolkien’s world on Saturday, June 20, as downtown Chillicothe transformed into a living Middle-earth for a free, family-friendly day of themed activities, costumes, and local business specials.
The “Middle-Earth in Downtown Chillicothe” event ran from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and invited participants to explore participating shops and restaurants through a Tolkien-inspired lens. Organized as a walkable, come-and-go experience, the day featured special offers, hands-on activities, and community fun without any admission fee. Pre-registration through Eventbrite entered attendees in prize drawings and helped organizers plan giveaways.

Local businesses leaned into the theme. At Maggie’s Farm + Aromatics on North Paint Street, visitors could pour their own Elven-inspired candles starting at $12 with no appointment needed. Other downtown establishments offered themed drinks, riddles, merchandise, and immersive touches that encouraged people to linger and discover what Chillicothe has to offer.

Costumes were highly encouraged, and the response was enthusiastic. Multiple divisions of costume contests took place, including one for adults held on the steps of the Ross County Courthouse along Paint Street. A striking, full-armor portrayal of Sauron, complete with the iconic helmet, mace, and flowing black robes, claimed the top spot in the adult contest. A good-sized crowd gathered to watch the entries and cheer on the creativity on display. Kids’ contests and other categories added to the festive atmosphere earlier in the day.

The event unfolded against the backdrop of Chillicothe’s deep historic roots. The city served as Ohio’s first capital, and the first state constitution was adopted here in 1802. Photos from the day captured costumed participants posing on the courthouse steps near the commemorative plaque marking that site, a fitting stage for a day when imagination brought another epic tale to life in southern Ohio.

“It was a quest worth taking right here at home,” one attendee noted, capturing the spirit of the day. No one needed to cross the Brandywine or climb Mount Doom; the fellowship gathered in Ross County instead.
The free event underscored the creativity and community connections that define small-town southern Ohio. With strong local participation and a visible turnout of families and fans, it gave downtown Chillicothe a memorable boost while offering residents of Ross County and surrounding areas in southern Ohio a unique reason to explore their own backyard.

Whether you came dressed as a hobbit, elf, wizard, or even the Dark Lord himself, the day proved that Middle-earth magic thrives just as well in the hills of southern Ohio as it does on the page.
