Southern Ohio Gas Station Clerk and Two Juveniles Assaulted During Robbery Attempt; Suspect Arrested Hours Later in Scioto County

West Portsmouth, Ohio — A 33-year-old man from northern Ohio faces felony robbery and assault charges after allegedly attacking a convenience store clerk and two juveniles who tried to help during a theft attempt at a gas station in Scioto County.

According to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, at about 12:57 a.m. on May 26, 2026, a male subject arrived at Super Quick at 1051 Galena Pike in West Portsmouth. He attempted to obtain roughly $30 worth of gasoline without prepaying.

When the store clerk went outside and told him prepayment was required, the suspect began acting erratically and said he was taking the gasoline for free. He then assaulted the clerk.

Two juvenile males who saw what was happening tried to assist the clerk. Both were also assaulted by the suspect. The suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived.

A deputy responded to the business, took an initial report, and the case was sent to a detective for further investigation. Deputies searched the surrounding area but did not find the suspect right away.

Around 8:15 a.m. the same day, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a male driving suspiciously in the Otway area and appearing to be under the influence. The vehicle matched the description from the gas station incident.

Deputies located the vehicle, detained the driver, and took him to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. He was charged in connection with the earlier robbery and assaults.

Arrested was Troy Roop Jr., 33, whose last known address is in Conneaut, Ohio.

He has been charged with one count of robbery, a second-degree felony, and three counts of assault, first-degree misdemeanors.

Roop is being held in the Scioto County Jail on a $78,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on May 27, 2026.

The robbery attempt and assaults occurred in West Portsmouth in Scioto County in southern Ohio. The investigation remains ongoing.
