Athens Man Arrested After Shots Fired Incident

ATHENS, Ohio — A 19-year-old Athens man was taken into custody early Saturday morning following reports of gunfire in the area of East Carpenter Street.

According to the Athens Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:22 p.m. on March 6, 2026, after receiving reports of shots fired near 4 East Carpenter Street.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with multiple witnesses and reviewed security camera footage from surrounding businesses, which confirmed that a firearm had been discharged in the area.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect vehicle using Flock traffic camera systems and later located both the vehicle and the suspect.

Police identified the suspect as Jacob W. Schneider, 19, of Athens. Schneider was taken into custody at approximately 1:13 a.m. and charged with Discharge of a Firearm on or Near Prohibited Premises, a third-degree felony.

Authorities stated additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

Schneider is currently being held at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail and is expected to appear in Athens County Common Pleas Court.

Police reported no injuries in connection with the incident and stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.

As with all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
