Adults Removed After Disturbance at YMCA Youth Basketball Game

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A disturbance involving two adults during a youth basketball league (YBL) game at the YMCA of Ross County on February 21 resulted in a police response and removal from the facility.

In a public statement issued following the incident, the YMCA apologized to members and especially to the youth who witnessed what it described as “disruptive behavior of a few adults” during the morning game. The organization called the conduct “completely unacceptable behavior by a few adults who ruin experiences for young children.”

The YMCA further stated that the involved parties had been permanently removed from the facility and that the matter was referred to the Chillicothe Police Department.

Police Response

According to Chillicothe Police Department Case PD-P2600628, officers responded to the YMCA on Mill Street at approximately 10:21 a.m. on February 21 for a reported disturbance. The incident was classified as Disorderly Conduct under Ohio Revised Code 2917.11.

Officer Christopher Claytor made contact with two adult males identified as Jeremy Smith and Jonathan Hunter.

According to the supplement narrative, Smith stated he was coaching a basketball team and disagreed with a call made by referee Hunter. Smith approached Hunter regarding the call. The report states Hunter then began aggressively walking toward Smith and yelling. Smith told officers he felt threatened and pushed Hunter. The two men began pushing each other before unknown individuals entered the court area and separated them.

After speaking with both individuals, neither party wished to pursue charges. The case was listed as closed and resolved.

Facility Action

While the police report documents a same-day trespass from the facility, the YMCA’s public statement indicates that the involved parties have since been permanently removed. It is not clear from the report whether additional administrative action occurred after officers cleared the scene.

The YMCA is a longstanding community institution with ties to the community dating back to 1928. This facility provides not only recreational opportunities — like youth basketball and fitness programs — but also support services like child care and health-oriented classes.

No injuries were reported.
