A Columbus man is charged with murder after two women were shot Wednesday morning on Gibbard Avenue in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood, and one of them died.
Columbus police officers responded about 7:37 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, to the 800 block of Gibbard Avenue on the city’s Near East Side, where they found two women who had been shot with a shotgun. Medics took both women in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.
Indya Dickerson, 25, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 8:25 a.m. Police said the second woman, who has not been publicly identified, is expected to survive.
Police said the shooting grew out of a domestic dispute between Dickerson and Christian Houchins, 34, of the Marion-Franklin neighborhood. Houchins later turned himself in to officers in the 400 block of North Champion Avenue.
Houchins is charged with murder and felonious assault. He is being held in the James A. Karnes Franklin County Corrections Center and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Franklin County Municipal Court.
Court records show Houchins had an active bench warrant in a June case charging him with domestic violence and assault in a prior incident at the same Gibbard Avenue address. The warrant was issued after he failed to appear for a hearing on Oct. 5.
The charges are not a conviction, and Houchins is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Columbus police homicide detectives are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Section at 614-645-4221.
