WAVERLY, Ohio — An 18-year-old Piketon man is in jail after the Pike County Sheriff’s Office says he led deputies and Waverly police on a chase that topped 120 mph early Sunday, then tried to strike a police cruiser with his car.

According to a media release from the sheriff’s office, the pursuit began at about 1:42 a.m. Sunday, November 1, after deputies clocked Jace Lawson driving 84 mph in a 50 mph zone on U.S. Route 23.

Deputies and Waverly officers followed Lawson’s black 2012 Honda Accord onto State Route 32 westbound, where the sheriff’s office says speeds passed 120 mph.

Near Meade Road, Lawson pulled to the side of the road, the release says. As a deputy got out of his cruiser and walked toward the car, Lawson accelerated and took off again. While fleeing a second time, the sheriff’s office says, Lawson tried to strike a Waverly Police Department cruiser with his vehicle.

The chase ended on U.S. Route 32 near the rest area in Pike County, where Lawson was taken into custody without further incident. The sheriff’s office says he was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He was taken to the Adena Pike Emergency Room and medically cleared before being booked into the Fayette County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

Lawson is charged with failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, speeding, and operating a vehicle under the influence.

Criminal charges are allegations, and Lawson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
