CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The James Hagen Crisis Care Center officially opened today at 11485 County Road 550 in Chillicothe, providing a vital new resource for individuals experiencing mental health crises in the region.
The facility, a collaboration between the Paint Valley Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health (PVADAMH) Board and Coleman Health Services, features an eight-chair 23-hour observation unit for walk-in or drop-off crisis assessments and an eight-bed Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) for short-term, non-hospital inpatient care. These services aim to deliver timely stabilization, reduce emergency department overuse for behavioral health needs, and connect individuals to appropriate ongoing care.
Multiple local law enforcement leaders attended the ribbon-cutting event, highlighting the center’s role as a key partner for first responders. The facility supports law enforcement diversion efforts, allowing officers to bring individuals in crisis to a specialized setting rather than emergency rooms or jails when appropriate.
The center serves the five-county Paint Valley ADAMH Board region, which includes Fayette, Highland, Pickaway, Pike, and Ross counties. Plans include potential future expansion with mobile crisis response teams to provide community-based intervention.
Funding for the project, totaling approximately $7.96 million, came through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars administered by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. The development followed a 2022 crisis continuum assessment by the PVADAMH Board and aligns with state and national guidelines for behavioral health crisis systems.
Coleman Health Services, the provider operating the center, is a longstanding nonprofit behavioral health organization serving communities across Ohio.
