Meet Jimothy: Seattle’s Viral Short-Spine Raccoon

SEATTLE — A distinctive raccoon spotted roaming residential streets in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood has gone viral, earning the nickname “Jimothy” and sparking widespread online fascination with its unique appearance.

Videos of the animal, showing its compact, rounded body and agile movements, have amassed millions of views across social media platforms. One clip shared by a local resident quickly drew attention for the raccoon’s unusually close front and rear legs, giving it an almost spherical torso that some compared to a cryptid or cartoon character.

According to reports from KIRO 7 News and local residents, Jimothy was first prominently noticed in mid-July 2026. Additional footage, including images from when the raccoon was a kit, has since surfaced, confirming sightings in the area over time. Some Ballard neighbors have reported seeing the animal previously, with one family referring to it affectionately as “Nubby.”

Veterinarian Marcie Logsdon reviewed available footage and identified what appears to be a rare congenital spinal deformity, often associated with short-spine syndrome. This condition results in a shortened spine, limiting flexibility in the neck and torso while creating the raccoon’s distinctive compact look.

Experts emphasize that, despite its unusual build, Jimothy seems spry, capable of climbing, walking, and foraging independently. Wildlife officials and locals urge residents to observe from a distance, avoid feeding or interacting with the animal, and respect its natural habitat as part of urban wildlife.

The story has resonated widely, with fans sharing memes, fan art, and positive commentary celebrating the raccoon’s resilience. Similar conditions occur in other animals, including dogs, though they are less commonly documented in raccoons.

As of the latest reports, Jimothy continues to be spotted in Ballard, delighting neighbors while remaining a wild animal thriving on its own terms. Authorities continue to monitor urban wildlife interactions in the area.
