Chillicothe City Councilman Dan DeMint is asking residents what they think of a proposal to fully restore the historic canal warehouse at the northeast corner of Main and Mulberry streets, the project now called Preservation Hall.
DeMint, who represents the 6th Ward, posted architectural renderings this week and said he has permission to share them. He called the building an important community asset and said planning is already well along.
The three-story brick warehouse dates to the Ohio and Erie Canal era (listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973). It is owned by Ohio Erie Development Company Ltd. Earlier public reports put the adaptive-reuse plan at about $8 million. Prior descriptions of the project have included restaurant or gathering space, canal history interpretation, co-working or studio space, and upper-floor uses.
DeMint praised local preservationists and said a finished building would add to downtown’s restored historic stock. He invited memories, concerns, and ideas.
He is an elected official asking for public input, not announcing a city-funded project. Any future city role (zoning, historic review, incentives) would still go through normal public processes.
