The Notre Dame Lady Titans advanced to the Division VII Southeast District championship game by defeating the South Webster Lady Jeeps 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-18), Tuesday night at Southeastern High School.
In each set, Notre Dame was able to have a long stint at the service line to stretch the margin. The serves and digs were solid and Jaysa Bryant was a monster at the net with 28 kills, unofficially, to lead the Lady Titans.
In the first set South Webster jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The teams traded sideouts for the next several moments with nobody serving more than two consecutive points.
Notre Dame clawed back to tie the score at 9-9 before taking the lead by six, 14-8, with Rudy Webb doing the work in the back and net play of Jaysa Bryant. After a South Webster timeout, the teams traded service errors before the Lady Titans sent Symdey Phillips to the back line.
The Notre Dame lead that once stood at six, extended to eight and then to ten, 23-13, South Webster couldn’t make a comeback and lost the first set when a kill attempt was batted into net and gave NDHS the opening set 25-15.
In the second set South Webster jumped out to a 3-0 lead before a kill by Bryant for Notre Dame gave her team the service line. A trading of points and net play by both teams dominated the next few minutes. South Webster maintained a slim edge, but a Phillips kill tied the game at 8.
Phillips then stepped to the back line. With net play from Bryant and several digs by other teammates the Lady Titans extended their lead. Phillips served up 10 consecutive points. Bryant looked like a basketball player dunking the ball on her last kill of the rally making the score 19-8.
After a trading of points, Notre Dame sent Ryan Purcell to the back line. Purcell served up four straight points, including two kills by Phillips. Purcell reached set point before South Webster recorded a sideout.
Notre Dame closed out the set 25-11 to move one step closer to the district championship match.
In the third set, Emma Campbell gave South Webster a 3-0 lead by serving three straight points from the service line including two aces. Notre Dame quickly erased the lead, but a kill by Skyla Cummings put the Lady Jeeps up by one, 4-3.
It looked like Notre Dame might pull away, but an Avery Claxon kill kept the game within three, 10-7. The margin held at three at 12-9 when back to back kills by Kennedy Hamilton and Lucy Montgomery trimmed the Notre Dame lead to one, 12-11. A long serve by the Jeeps ended the rally.
Phillips stepped to the service line and rattled off eight straight points. During the rally Charlotte Wallace recorded a kill and Bryant got a block for a point. The score was 20-11.
Claxon recorded back-to-back tip kills late in the set, for South Webster, but it wouldn’t be enough as Notre Dame closed out the set, 25-18, to win the match.
In the other semifinal the Trimble Tomcats defeated Portsmouth Clay in three sets. The Tomcats will meet the Lady Titans at 3 p.m. Saturday at Southeastern High School in the district championship match.
