The Athens County Sheriff’s Office hosted nearly 50 law enforcement and criminal justice professionals from at least 16 Ohio counties for training on Ohio’s sex offender and arson offender registration requirements and the state’s violent offender database.
Presenters included the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, OffenderWatch, Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, U.S. Marshals Service, and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Topics covered legal requirements, procedures, records, supervision, enforcement, and agency roles.
Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith said consistent administration of the requirements across jurisdictions helps officers monitor compliance and protect communities. He thanked Madison County Sheriff John Swaney, who oversees the Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association Offender Registration Committee, the Attorney General’s Office, presenters, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for providing the training facility.
