Change Takes Action: Volunteers Clean Up Yoctangee Park Ahead of the Christmas Lights

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Change did not come from a meeting on Saturday morning. It came with buckets, grabbers, rakes and yard bags.

Downtown Chillicothe partnered with EPIC and Shine on Chillicothe for a cleanup day at Yoctangee Park, and volunteers spent the morning doing the unglamorous work: picking up litter, raking leaves and filling bag after bag to get the park ready for the Christmas lights.

Nobody had to be there. That is the point. Families brought their kids, neighbors worked alongside a Lowe’s crew member in a red vest, and the group spread out over the paths, the gazebo and the grounds until the park looked ready for the season.

The timing is no accident. Yoctangee Park hosts Chillicothe’s Christmas lights every winter, and the display does not go up over a messy park. The cleanup is the part nobody sees once the lights are on, and it happens because people show up.

Downtown Chillicothe thanked everyone who came out to help ready the park, along with Chillicothe Hardware and Lowe’s Home Improvement for backing the effort.

Talk is cheap. On Saturday morning, change looked like a full yard bag and a clean path. The park is ready. The lights are next.
