HOCKING COUNTY, Ohio — An individual wanted on a felonious assault charge was hospitalized Thursday after authorities say he opened fire on Hocking County deputies attempting to execute an arrest warrant near Laurelville.
According to the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to a residence on State Route 180 at approximately 9:33 a.m. on October 2, 2026, in an attempt to serve the warrant.
Sheriff Lanny E. North said deputies attempted to make contact with the individual and repeatedly ordered him to come to the door. Authorities said those commands were ignored, while vehicles belonging to the wanted individual were observed in the driveway.
Deputies subsequently entered the residence. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the individual then exited a room and began firing a weapon at deputies.
An exchange of gunfire followed, during which the individual was struck. No deputies were reported injured.
Deputies provided first aid until EMS personnel arrived. The individual was then transported to a hospital for treatment. His identity and current condition were not immediately released in the statement.
Agents with the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene and are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
Authorities said the incident remains under investigation and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
