Local news blog The County Press first reported the arrest and charges against Nathaniel T. “Nate” Freeman, the 36-year-old assistant fire chief with the Scioto Township Fire Department. Freeman faces one count of importuning, a fifth-degree felony, and two counts of disseminating harmful matter to juveniles, also fifth-degree felonies.
Scioto Township Fire Chief Rick Ray has confirmed the charges and placed Freeman on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the legal process. Chief Ray stated that the department is aware of the arrest and charges, takes the allegations seriously, and is fully cooperating with authorities. A preliminary probable cause hearing is scheduled for August 24.
The case has generated strong emotions across the local Fire and EMS community. Freeman has been a visible figure in the profession, and the nature of the charges has struck many as a deep betrayal of the trust placed in first responders who routinely work with children through safety education and junior firefighter programs.
One local resident shared a blunt public statement reflecting that anger. The resident’s identity is being withheld because the words themselves carry significant weight and give voice to sentiments many active members of the Fire and EMS fraternity feel they cannot express openly. The post reads in part:
“Nate Freeman, YOU DISGUSTING LOW LIFE RAT FUCK PIECE OF SHIT PEDOPHILE!!! You seriously tried to fuck a 15yr old kid? You’ve brought dishonor to the Fire/EMS community. The men and women in our fraternity save children. We teach them fire safety classes. We mentor them when they join junior firefighter programs. We don’t show up with sex toys and try to fuck them. Speaking of those men and women, they’ve largely been publicly silent on what you pulled. Mainly because they don’t want the brass giving them hell over discussing shit online. Well, I’m not a hose dragger anymore and don’t answer to a chief. I can say what I want. So on behalf of my brothers and sisters in Fire/EMS that aren’t allowed to say what they really want to say, you’re no longer one of us and we genuinely hope the judge throws the book at you. You deserve the worst punishment allowed by law for being a disgusting pedophile and disgrace to the Fire/EMS community.”
The reaction underscores how seriously many in the community view the alleged conduct and the damage it does to the reputation of those who serve.
It must be stated clearly that these remain allegations only. Freeman has not been convicted of any crime. Under Ohio law and the American justice system, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The August 24 hearing will determine whether probable cause exists for the case to move forward. Any final determination will rest with the courts based on the evidence presented.
This is a developing story. The community continues to watch closely as the legal process unfolds.
