A 37-year-old Lorain man was fatally shot by an Elyria police officer on January 21, 2026, after robbing a Brinks armored truck at gunpoint in Elyria, leading officers on a high-speed multi-agency chase, and taking a mother of four hostage in a North Olmsted apartment.
Around 3 p.m. that Wednesday, Elyria police responded to an aggravated robbery involving a firearm at the AT&T store at 1547 West River Road North. Authorities said the store was being serviced by a Brinks armored vehicle when the suspect, later identified as John P. Johnson of Lorain, approached the driver at gunpoint. He forced her into the Brinks truck, stole an undisclosed amount of cash, and fled the scene in a separate vehicle.
Police located a vehicle linked to the robbery in Lorain. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, sparking a pursuit that involved multiple agencies including Elyria, Lorain, North Olmsted, and others. The chase moved through Elyria and Lorain before continuing eastbound on U.S. Route 20 into North Olmsted.
