CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The City of Chillicothe shared a recent progress update on the ongoing transformation of Yoctangee Park, highlighting completed and advancing work on several key features funded through the state’s Appalachian Community Grant Program.
According to the city, the pavilion now has its doors installed, exterior siding finished, and interior fans and lighting in place. A new parking lot has been paved and lined, new light poles are installed, and the amphitheater stage foundation is complete with the shell structure under construction.
Work continues on other elements. Diamond One dugouts and the press box are nearing completion. Inside the historic Armory, crews are installing lighting and flooring, continuing painting, and putting in windows, among other interior improvements. The Mill Street roundabout is also nearing completion and is expected to open before the start of the school year.
These updates form part of a broader $35 million investment awarded to the City of Chillicothe in 2024 under the Appalachian Community Grant Program. The award supports renovations and new construction throughout and surrounding Yoctangee Park. It is part of a larger $154 million allocation for Ross County-area projects within a $500 million statewide initiative focused on Ohio’s Appalachian counties. The program draws on American Rescue Plan Act funds administered through the Governor’s Office of Appalachia and the Ohio Department of Development.
City officials have described the overall effort as completing a long-standing vision for the park tied to the region’s UNESCO World Heritage designation for the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. Projects include restoration and expansion of the historic Armory into a welcome center and flexible event space that preserves original architectural details, a permanent pavilion intended to house the Chillicothe Farmers Market and other community events, the new amphitheater, recreational field upgrades, court improvements, and street and gateway enhancements around the park and downtown.
Construction on the Armory and related park improvements began in July 2025, with overall project completion targeted for the end of September 2026, according to city project information.
Chillicothe City Schools plan a staggered start beginning around mid-August 2026, with most students reporting by late August. The city’s statement on the Mill Street roundabout aligns with that timeline.
