A group of nursing graduates from the Chillicothe area recently completed the OhioHealth Nurse Residency Program, marking an important step in their transition to acute care bedside nursing. The milestone drew community attention through a recent social media post by Ohio University in Chillicothe, which expressed pride in the new nurses and highlighted their achievement.
The post named the graduates as Ben Shaw, Danny Penrod, Chloe Reed, Kathryn Stevens, Daphne Atwood, Emily Lyons and Tana Rayole. It celebrated the full group as Ohio University Chillicothe nursing graduates.
OhioHealth describes its Nurse Residency Program as one that helps new acute care registered nurses transition to bedside care. The program builds the knowledge, skills and experience needed to deliver excellent care. Residents benefit from interactions with experienced preceptors, subject matter experts and small peer groups throughout their first year. A blended learning approach includes didactic content, hands-on skills practice and simulations. The curriculum also supports development of decision-making skills in clinical judgment, ethics and safety, encourages evidence-based practice at the point of care, and emphasizes therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
Ohio University Chillicothe offers an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing and fully approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing. The four-semester curriculum combines classroom, laboratory and supervised clinical experiences at hospitals, clinics and community agencies near the Chillicothe campus. Graduates become eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.
The completion of the residency by these local nurses reflects the pathway many south central Ohio students follow from Ohio University Chillicothe nursing education into professional practice with major health systems.
