Over 1,000 Runners Set to Tackle 150-Mile Buck Fifty Relay This Weekend in Ross County Ohio

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – More than 1,000 runners from 140 teams are expected to participate in the 2026 Buck Fifty relay race this weekend, April 17 and 18, as one of south central Ohio’s signature community fitness events returns to Ross County.

The overnight 150-mile relay begins at Ohio University Chillicothe, located at 101 University Drive. Staggered starts run from approximately 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon through the early evening, with the final teams departing around 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Runners will complete 30 legs across a course that features about 60 percent back-country roads, 15 percent trail runs, and 25 percent through historic Chillicothe. The route loops through scenic southern Ohio landscapes, including segments in multiple state parks such as Great Seal, Tar Hollow, and Scioto Trail, along with several school campuses.

Teams compete in 10-person or 5-person formats. The race winds through rolling hills, valleys, and trails that challenge participants of varying skill levels while showcasing the natural beauty and heritage of the region. The finish line returns to the Ohio University Chillicothe campus on Saturday.

All race profits support teen drug prevention efforts in Ross County. Organizers direct funds to eight local high school chapters of the Drug Free Clubs of America program, known locally as M.A.D.E. (My Attitude Determines Everything). The voluntary initiative reports average enrollment above 50 percent and focuses on positive youth development and substance abuse prevention.

Race Director Dave Huggins and volunteers have prepared detailed resources, including a 2026 guidebook with maps, safety guidelines, and logistics. Participants and spectators can find lodging options near the course, such as the Fairfield by Marriott off Route 35, or campgrounds including Sun Valley and Walnut Creek. Organizers stress respect for private property and adherence to safety rules to ensure a smooth event for all involved.

The Buck Fifty highlights the strong sense of community in Ross County and surrounding areas of Appalachian Ohio. It draws runners from across the state and beyond to experience the region’s roads, trails, and historic sites while contributing to a meaningful local cause.

Spectators are welcome to cheer on participants at transition zones and along the route. This annual event continues to grow as a highlight of the spring calendar in south central Ohio, combining physical challenge, scenic adventure, and community support in one memorable weekend.
