Chillicothe Officers Honored for Bravery in Life-Threatening Ambush: Medal of Valor Awarded After Gunfire Exchange

Chillicothe, Ohio – The Chillicothe Police Department has honored three officers for their exceptional courage and quick actions during a dangerous officer-involved shooting on August 27, 2025, in the 300 block of East Main Street.

Officer Sprague received the Medal of Valor, the department’s highest recognition, for extraordinary heroism. After being struck by gunfire in an ambush-style attack from a 15-year-old suspect, Officer Sprague continued to return fire despite his wound, safeguarding himself and the public from additional threats.

Officer Sizemore earned the Silver Star for exceptional bravery in the same event. As the armed suspect fled after shooting an officer, Officer Sizemore moved toward the danger to provide immediate lifesaving first aid to the wounded individual.

Sergeant Yoder was presented with a Letter of Commendation for his decisive response. He promptly rendered aid to the injured fellow officer, assisted in moving him to a patrol vehicle, and transported him swiftly to the hospital for emergency treatment.

In an official statement, the Chillicothe Police Department expressed deep pride in these officers, noting that their actions exemplify the character, courage, and commitment of the department’s members who protect the south central Ohio community daily.

The incident, which involved an officer being shot in the chest (protected by a ballistic vest) before returning fire, was investigated with body camera footage later released to the public. These awards highlight the risks law enforcement officers face and their dedication to service in Ross County and beyond.
