One person has died and a second death has been reported after a three-vehicle crash on Morse Road in Columbus, according to Columbus police and reporting by The Columbus Dispatch.
The crash happened at about 7:15 a.m. on Friday, October 30, on Morse Road near Sundance Drive on the Northeast Side. Three vehicles were involved, and seven people were injured, including five children.
According to a Columbus police crash report, a 2022 Toyota Highlander driven by Leylo Omar, 38, was traveling west on Morse Road when it veered into eastbound traffic. It crashed head-on into a 2014 Ford Escape driven by Myani Cheatham, 20. Cheatham’s vehicle then crashed into a 2019 Genesis G70 driven by Michael Fulmore.
All five children in the Highlander were taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in critical condition. According to the crash report, Mohamed Omar, 3, died at the hospital. As of November 5, two children remained in critical condition, according to the crash report.
Leylo Omar was taken in critical condition to Mount Carmel East Hospital, and Cheatham was taken in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. Fulmore had minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to the crash report.
The crash report does not specifically state that Cheatham was pronounced dead. Her sister, Azhane Garrett, reported that Cheatham died on Wednesday night, November 4, and the family had said doctors told them she had no brain activity after the crash.
The crash report does not give a reason why the Highlander veered into oncoming traffic and does not indicate that drugs or alcohol played a factor, according to the Dispatch. The Columbus police Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate.
